Gentle Adjustment Techniques

A question we frequently get asked in clinic is whether every patient is adjusted the same way. In short, the answer is no. There are a range of techniques Chiropractors can be trained in performing, however it also depends on the Chiropractor you see as to which of these techniques they are trained in and which they choose to use. Every patient is different so it is important that we adjust where will be effective and safe for that individual. And although many adjustments might look similar from patient to patient, in fact, each adjustment is made to correct that patient’s particular problem.

Gentle Adjustment Techniques

When most people think of a Chiropractic adjustment, they think of the techniques that produce the cracking and popping sounds. But not all adjustments produce this audible sound. In some cases, we may use a specialised table or instrument to help perform the adjustment.

Here at Body Care Health & Chiropractic, instead of using our hands to perform an adjustment we often use an instrument known as an Activator. The Activator is a small handheld, spring loaded device that can perform precise adjustments at a low force, often making it more comfortable for patients. Activators are great to use on patients who are worried about the ‘cracking’ technique, or if exam or x-rays findings show that it is not safe to adjust someone manually. This technique can be used on all joints in the body, including the smaller joints of the foot or wrist.

Another technique that we use in our clinic is known as a Drop Table. This technique achieves the same goal of correcting joint restrictions in the body and the drop table allows the adjustment to be performed using less force on the body which can make this adjustment technique more comfortable for the patient.

When being adjusted using a drop table, you will often lay face down and feel a part of the table rise up underneath you. The Chiropractor will then push down, causing the piece to “drop” beneath you back into it’s original place. Here at Body Care Health & Chiropractic, the most common area of the body we will use this technique is in the lower back.

As mention previously, there are a range of Chiropractic techniques we use and in your initial appointment we will discuss all of these options to help your understanding and comfort levels. We at Body Care Health & Chiropractic tailor each adjustment and treatment plan to each individual’s case and needs.
