Mental Health Tips For Coping During COVID-19

During the COVID-19 outbreak many people have been feeling worried, stressed and anxious due to the major changes occurring. While we all make changes to our lives to help stop the spread of the virus it is important to remember to look after our mental and emotional health.

Here are some tips to help you cope with the changes and hopefully reduce your stress during these difficult times.

Create a new daily routine

Create a daily routine that can help with stability and give your days a sense of purpose. Try to include time slots for your regular work hours if you are employed, meals, exercise and perhaps try something different like meditation.

Keep yourself busy

If you are finding that you currently have more time on your hands look for opportunities. Is there a hobby or a skill you have been wanting to add to your life? Eg, work on a business plan, learn an instrument or new language, get out those old puzzles and colouring-in books.

Stay connected with family and friends, check in on others to see how they are coping

Call, message, video-con or email other people to help you feel more in touch and supported. Check in on those friends of neighbours to see how they are also coping. Remember to catch up and have a laugh.

Practice self-care

If you are feeling stressed or anxious try to learn some strategies to help you relax and reduce stress. This could include mindfulness meditation, controlled breathing or yoga. Try to stay on top of your sleep and healthy eating habits. Reduce potential household tension

-       Give yourself space. A small break eg 15mins to yourself perhaps outside or in another room can help you think more clearly and give you time to regroup your emotions.

-       Create routines so you know who is doing what at what time. You can also include house chores and very importantly exercise into the routines.

-       Remind everyone that you are all in this together. Communicate respectfully and don’t forget to also have some fun!

Remember why we are doing this

It is important to remember that we are all in this together, working to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. We are working to keep our community and loved ones safe and healthy.

Reach out for support!

This is a challenging time for everyone, some more than others. Always remember that there are people out there to support you. Don’t be afraid to reach out to a mental health professional is you are feeling lonely, sad or depressed.
