Upper Cross Syndrome

Do you suffer from pain in your neck, shoulders or upper back? You could be experiencing Upper Cross Syndrome.

Upper Cross Syndrome refers to a person’s posture where the head is further forward and the shoulders are rolled forward also. This position creates a curve or as some would say, a hunched position in the upper back.

Due to a lot of people sitting at their desk for hours with work and everyone looking down at their phones, this posture has become very common.

If our bodies are in this position for a long period of time it can lead to musculoskeletal conditions that could results in acute and chronic pain and other issues including headaches.

The image above shows the cross that is formed. The muscles that become short and tight are the pectorals, scalenes, levator scapula, upper trapezius, sub occipitals and the sternocleidomastoid. The muscles that become long and weak are the thoracic erector spinal muscles, rhomboids, lower trapezius and the deep neck flexors.

If you experience pain or tightness in any of these areas mentioned above, you should reach out to our Chiropractors to discuss. Upper Cross Syndrome is something we frequently treat in clinic, so we would be more than happy to help you too! In our appointments we will look at your posture, treat any postural issues and restrictions that have been created, but will also work on loosening those tight muscles and strengthening the weaker muscles. A treatment plan will be constructed to suit you and your body’s needs.
