Supporting Growing Bodies: How We Can Better Care for Our Children

Over the past few months, our Chiropractors at Body Care Health and Chiropractic, have seen more and more children coming through the clinic. Some are experiencing posture changes. Some are active little athletes pushing their bodies hard in sport. Some are simply growing quickly — and their bodies are trying to keep up. What many parents don’t realise is that childhood is one of the most neurologically important seasons of life. Growth isn’t just about getting taller. It’s about the brain and body learning how to work together. And sometimes, that process needs support.

🌱 Growing Bodies Are Adapting — Constantly

Children’s spines and joints are not “mini adult” versions.

They are:

● Developing coordination

● Refining balance

● Building strength

● Learning posture

● Adapting to growth spurts

When a child grows quickly, bones can lengthen faster than muscles adapt.

That can lead to:

● Tightness

● Altered movement patterns

● Joint irritation

● Fatigue

● Increased injury risk

Add sport, school, heavy backpacks and screen time into the mix — and it’s a lot for a growing system to manage.

🏃‍♀️ The Rise of the Overworked Junior Athlete

We are seeing many children training multiple times a week, often in more than one sport. Movement is fantastic. Sport builds resilience, teamwork and confidence. But without proper recovery, variation and strength support, we can start to see:

● Heel pain (Sever’s)

● Knee pain (Osgood-Schlatter’s)

● Low back discomfort

● Recurrent ankle sprains

● Poor postural endurance

A helpful rule of thumb:

👉 Weekly training hours shouldn’t exceed your child’s age.

Rest is not laziness — it’s part of development.

📱 Posture & the Modern Child

Today’s children are growing up in a different environment than we did. More sitting. More screens. Less unstructured outdoor movement.

Over time this can contribute to:

● Forward head posture

● Rounded shoulders

● Reduced spinal extension

● Shallow breathing patterns

● Headaches or fatigue

It’s rarely about “bad posture” — it’s about nervous system adaptation to environment. The body simply adapts to what it does most.

🧠 Why Nervous System Support Matters

As a neurologically-focused chiropractor, I look beyond just muscles and joints. The spine protects the nervous system — and the nervous system coordinates growth, movement and recovery.

When a child’s system is under stress (physical, emotional or environmental), we may see:

● Increased tension

● Poor coordination

● Slower recovery

● Sleep disturbances

● Ongoing niggles that don’t quite resolve

Gentle chiropractic care aims to:

● Support spinal alignment

● Improve movement quality

● Enhance body awareness

● Reduce unnecessary tension

● Help the nervous system adapt more efficiently

It’s not about “cracking backs” — it’s about supporting healthy development.

🧩 What Supporting a Child Really Looks Like

It’s rarely just one thing. True support often includes:

● Age-appropriate strength and coordination work

● Adequate rest days

● Good sleep hygiene

● Proper nutrition

● Open conversations about stress

● A team approach (GP, physio, coaches when needed)

Our goal isn’t just to treat pain. It’s to help children:

● Move well

● Grow confidently

● Build resilience

● Develop awareness of their bodies early in life

Because when we support children well now, we set them up for healthier adulthood later.

✨If you’re noticing changes in your child’s posture, recurrent sporting niggles, or increased fatigue during growth phases, it may be worth having their spine and nervous system assessed.

One of the greatest benefits of supporting children early is that we can help prevent patterns of chronic tension from developing later in life. When kids are guided to understand their bodies from a young age, they often become more aware, more resilient, and better at communicating when something doesn’t feel right.

Early support isn’t about creating dependency — it’s about building body awareness, confidence and healthy movement habits that carry into adulthood.

At Body Care Health and Chiropractic, our aim is to walk alongside your child or teen through every stage of growth — supporting their posture, movement, recovery and nervous system as they develop.

Because growing is a journey — and they deserve to feel supported through it.
