Migraines

Migraines are a chronic neurological disorder characterised by episodic attacks of head pain and associated symptoms. The cause of migraines is believed to be a blend of ecological and hereditary components. Studies have shown that approximately 2 million Australians suffer from migraines and close to 10% of the total population.

Signs and symptoms include:

-          Headache that lasts from 6 to 72 hours

-          Severe unilateral or bilateral head pain

-          Headache that is worsened by physical activity

-          Sensitivity to light, sound and often smells

-          Nausea and/or vomiting

-          Eye torment

Triggers can include:

-          Hormonal changes

-          Stress

-          Fatigue

-          Diet

-          Lack of supplements in the body

-          Loud noises

-          Alcohol

-          Smoking

-          Head trauma

-          Poor spinal heath

What causes a Migraine?

As mentioned above, it is believed that genetics and environmental factors play a role. It was originally thought that the aura which is often experienced was purely due to vasoconstriction of cerebral blood vessels however the process is now known to involve a specific neurological phenomenon called ‘cortical spreading depression’. In cortical spreading depression electrical activity is reduced over an area of the cortex of the brain. This results in the release of specific cells which then irritate the nerves in the brain stem, thus creating a migraine.
