Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is Carpal Tunnel?

The Carpal Tunnel is a narrow passage in the wrist which is formed by the carpal bones on the bottom and the transverse carpal ligament. The tendons which allow hand and finger movements, as well as the median nerve which provides feeling in the 1st to 4th fingers all pass through this tunnel. Therefore if there is any swelling or restrictions within this tunnel the median nerve will be compressed causing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Symptoms

-          Pain in the hand, wrist and/ or forearm

-          Pain can increase at night

-          Hand numbness

-          Sensation of pins and needles

-          Weakness in the hand and/ or wrist.

Causes

As mentioned above, any type of restriction or swelling in the wrist area can potentially cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. These include;

-          Repetitive hand movements: overtime can cause swelling on the tendons

-          Wrist fractures: may cause movement of the bones and swelling on the tendons

-          Arthritis: particularly Rheumatoid Arthritis

-          Pregnancy: swelling can occur to due to the increase in blood volume and fluid retention

-          Illness: conditions such as Hypothyroidism and Diabetes

-          Congenital: some people are simply born with a particularly narrow carpal tunnel

Treatment

It is important to seek treatment if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms as it is important to prevent any possible nerve damage.

A Chiropractor can help treat both the problem and the pain associated with this syndrome. A Chiropractor can mobilise and adjust the bones in the wrist to improve the space in the tunnel and get the joints moving correctly again.

A Chiropractor will also give exercises and stretches to improve joint mobility and to improve the hands fine motor skills and strength.

If the condition is caused by repetitive movements then rest is important. Splinting the wrist may be an option to hold it in a relaxed position particularly at night.

If non-invasive treatments do not provide relief, surgical intervention may be required. Early treatment can help avoid this unfortunate outcome.
